Abstract

This study is aimed to find the connotation meanings of expressions associated with sad or melancholic found in Ain’t No Sunshine by Bill Withers and Nobody’s Child by Karen Young song lyrics. These songs are chosen because their songs represent sadness or melancholic or sorrowful. In this research, the researcher used a qualitative method. The result of the analysis shows that the lyrics of the songs chosen contain words that connotes sad or melancholic. Mostly, the lyrics describe the sadness of a person with their sad experiences. These connotative meanings correlate with the symbols of despair such as the words darkness and die which are usually used in expression of despair. In conclusion the song writer can use words that connote the desire to express sad feelings by describing the situation that occured at that time.
