Abstract

Interlanguage is a learner‘s language. It is a process of achieving for the second language. In using a second language, the use of appropriate grammar is important to get the meaningful utterances. This research was conducted to investigate the interlanguage syntax used by the eighth-semester students at the Faculty of Language and Cultural Studies at Stikubank University Semarang. This study aims to know the sentence patterns and the types of syntax errors produced by the students in their spoken language. Error in this study refers to the non-standard English that the students produced. The tree diagram theory from Bornstein was used to analyze the students‘ utterances sentence patterns. Meanwhile, the types of syntax errors were analyzed by using Linguistic Category Taxonomy by Heidi Dulay. The data in this study were analyzed qualitatively based on the Miles and Huberman rules, namely: data reduction, data display, and drawing the conclusion. The finding showed 31 sentence patterns from the 38 sentences with the most dominant patterns started with conjunction plus noun phrase plus verb phrase. The result also showed 20 types of syntax errors in the noun phrase, verb phrase, and conjunction.
