Abstract
This research focuses on discrimination toward women in the Whale Rider (2002) movie. The research analyzes the causes of the main character experiencing discrimination in the While Rider movie, the struggle to be a leader and, the forms of discrimination on the main female character in the Whale Rider movie. This study applied the theory of Kate Millet written in Sexual Politics (1970). Through Millet’s theory, Sexual Politics (1970) shows how the position of men is more dominant than women patriarchal societies. The word “politics” refers to a structured power relationship that shows one group controlling another group, whereas “sexual” refers to the display of supremacy by men over women, family, and society. The research was conducted by applying some procedures. First, the researcher watched the movie script. After that, she identified the movie script to get the data. She identified the utterances based on the problem statements. Then, the data were analyzed by applying Kate Millet’s Sexual Politics (1970). The result from this study are the causes of discrimination toward Pai, the forms of discrimination toward Pai and the struggle of Pai to be a leader. The forms of discrimination suffered are Pai manages to start a boat engine and her grandfather Koro forbids and scolds her, Pai is not allowed to attend male-only ceremonial gatherings, and also Pai is not allowed to touch their family’s ancestral whales. The causes of discrimination towards Pai are the use of female ancestor’s name to address the main character and the main character’s gender as a female. Finally, The struggle of Pai to fight the discrimination are the acts of the main character in attending boy’s class secretly, learning taiha, learning to use taiha, Pai call’s the whale’s by singing chant, finding reiputa, and speaking out her voice in speech competition
