Abstract

In this thesis, the writer analyzes a play of William Shakespeare’s Othello. The play Othello describes about the human life. The play’s theme consist jealousy and mistrust among its characters. The play also shows a lot of good examples about what is the effect of jealousy and mistrust to someone’s life. The worse effect of jealousy and mistrust can cause death. The setting of the play also influences the characteristic of the main character of William Shakespeare’s Othello, Othello. The objectives of the thesis are to describe the main character of the play and to describe the influences of jealousy and mistrust upon the tragic flaw reflected in the main character of the play. In arranging the thesis, the writer uses two kinds of method. They are method of the study and method of approach. As the method of the study the writer applies library research to collect the data and the information as the references. And for the method of approach the writer applies psychological approach and structuralism approach. The psychological approach uses to find the connection of the conflict, which happens in the characters of the play. While the structuralism approach is used to find out the relation between the intrinsic elements of the play. After analyzing, the writer found that the main character of William Shakespeare’s Othello is Othello. He is a superhero for his country, Venetian but he comes from Moors. He is being underestimated because of his color. He is a person who will overact when he is jealous of something which is belonging to him. He feels deep hurt when he knows that his beloved wife cheat and he kills her to punish her. The characterization of the main character of William Shakespeare’s Othello is influenced by the setting of the situation around the main character. And it causes the tragic flaw, death and regret ness. From the analyzes that have been done, the writer concluded that the main character of the play is Othello, he is a good general, simple and guileless person. Firstly he is underestimated by the people around him but because of his efforts he becomes one of the heroes of Venetian and being honored and loved. He is a person who really loves Desdemona, he feels that Desdemona is his center of life and when he knows that Desdemona Betrays him, he feels that his world is spinning. And he decides that Desdemona’s behavior needs to be punished. This decision is influenced by the setting of condition of the play, which is jealousy and mistrust. The jealousy and mistrust causes the tragic flaw. This tragic flaw cannot be changed only can be regretted.
