Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the ego defense mechanisms used by the female character, Minnie Foster or Mrs. Wright, in the short play "Trifles", which was created by Susan Glaspell. "Trifles" is an intriguing play that tells the story of a wife who was accused for killing her husband. The female character, Mrs. Wright, suffers from anxiety of being lonely and dissatisfied as is depicted in the play. Because of such a characteristic, her life is threatened by the surrounding culture, which considers a woman to have no power over a man in marriage life. The research was focused to Mrs. Wright's defense mechanisms, which she utilized to cope with the anxiety that she was experiencing in her life. This research used qualitative approaches to uncover Mrs. Wright's anxiety and her defense mechanisms, which were based on psychoanalytical theories developed by Sigmund Freud, particularly those related to anxiety. Based on the findings, Mrs. Wright experiences three types of anxiety in this movie script: loneliness, dissatisfaction, and provoking situation. Those three of which are associated by five types of ego defense mechanisms, namely Repression, Denial, Sublimation, Regression, and Rationalization.
