Abstract
ABSTRACT Firdaus, Nada. 2022. ‘Gender Discrimination toward Women in Cho Nam Joo’s Kim Ji-Young, Born 1982’. A Thesis, Department of English Literature, Undergraduate Program of University of Stikubank (UNISBANK) Semarang. Supervisor: Yulistiyanti, S.S., M.Hum. Gender discrimination is a form of discrimination based on sex. The main reason gender discrimination toward women happens is that patriarchal ideology still influences society in their mindsets or actions. This research discusses gender discrimination toward women in the novel Kim Ji-Young, Born 1982. The aims are to find out the forms and effects of gender discrimination toward women in the novel. This research is categorized as qualitative-based research that uses a feminism approach. The researcher analyses the novel using the theory of feminism by Simone de Beauvoir in her book The Second Sex (1949). The researcher found that in the novel Kim Ji-Young, Born 1982, there are two forms of gender discrimination: gender discrimination in domestic areas and gender discrimination in public areas. There are five types of gender discrimination in domestic areas found in the novel; (1) the obligation of women to have male offspring, (2) the acts of favoritism toward sons over daughters, (3) the belief that sons are the ones who guarantee family success, (4) women as reproducer, and (5) women as housewife. And there are three types of gender discrimination in public areas found in the novel; (1) discrimination against women in school, (2) discrimination against women in the workplace, and (3) sexual harassment against women. The effect of gender discrimination toward women on the main character, Kim Ji-Young, is that Ji-Young turns into someone else without realizing it because she wants to express her true opinions and thoughts
