Abstract
ABSTRACT Purnamasari, Lia. 2022. Ego Defense Mechanism of Gerard Conley as Homosexual in Gerard Conley’s Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity, Faith and Family. A final project in a Partial Fulfilment of the Requirement for a Degree Award of Sarjana Sastra in English Literature. Supervised by Yulistiyanti, S.S, M.Hum, Faculty of Law and Language, UNISBANK. This research aims to find out the internal conflict and external conflict, to reveal the id, ego and superego toward the conflict and to find out the kinds of ego defense mechanism that Gerard Conley used, as the main character in Boy Erased: A Memoir. This research applies a qualitative approach. To examine the internal and external conflicts, it employs the theory of literature by William Kenney. Concerning the psychoanalytic theory by Sigmund Freud, the writer applies the id, ego and superego, and the ego defense mechanism to emphasize each contribution toward the conflict Gerard faces and the defense mechanism Gerard used. First, the result is that Gerard experienced 4 (four) types of internal conflicts, such as his struggle with admitting his sexuality, his religious belief, his commitment to erasing sexuality, and his choices to be himself. Besides, Gerard experienced 2 (two) kinds of external conflicts: man vs. man and man vs. society. Second, the result proves that the id, ego, and superego contribute to the cause of the conflict in Gerard. Gerard’s id has 4 (four) wishes, such as admitting his sexuality, needing and seeking love from Chloe and his parent, expressing his sexual identity openly, and wishing to get freedom. On the other hand, the superego in Gerard acts by giving pride, judging or threatening him by feeling shame and guilt, which is internalized from a religious family, Christianity, as his belief and the environment. However, Gerard’s ego tends to postpone and repress the id in each decision and action by the influence of a strong superego. Third, this analysis also identifies 6 (six) ego defense mechanisms Gerard’s ego created to overcome each conflict: sublimation, regression, rationalization, displacement, reaction formation, and intellectualization.
