Abstract

ABSTRACT Aisya, Khantsa Nur. 2020. Class Discrimination by Victoria Aveyard’s Red Queen. A final project in Partial Fulfilment of the Requirement for a Degree Award of Sarjana Sastra in English Literature. Supervised by Yulistiyanti, S.S, M.Hum, Faculty of Law and Language, UNISBANK. This research aims to find out the discrimination in social class and social condition in Victoria Aveyard’s Red Queen. This research applies a qualitative and uses a context – oriented approach. This study uses the Marxism theory by Karl Marx to identify forms of discrimination against the lower class. Then this study also applies Max Weber’s to discuss the ideology of capitalism that emerged in the upper classes. The results showed that the lower class received discriminatory treatment from the upper class. There are several acts of discrimination that can be seen in this novel, there are denial or rejection discrimination and restriction discrimination. The denial or rejection discrimination is discrimination that occurs between individuals or groups who refuse, either directly or indirectly. for example, such as not allowing other races or genders to enter their territory. Then the restriction discrimination is some discrimination that contains prohibitions or rules aimed at weak groups and these rules are made by the powerful or stronger group. This study also shows that there are several social classes in society, the first is the upper class, it is the social class consisting of people with the highest social status. Second is the lower class, it is those in society who occupy the lowest social level. The upper class is Silver blood then the lower class is Red blood. Thus, the discriminatory attitude of people in power (Silver Blood) over the weak is supported by the emergence of the ideology of capitalism. This study reveals a lot of discrimination against the Red Bloods such as slavery, coercion, restriction of basic rights and perverted facilities.
