Abstract

rafting academic writing in English in the context of English as a Foreign Language is a challenge for students of the English Education Department. It happens because students do not yet understand and acquire academic writing conventions. Thy explores students’ academic writing problems and solutions in the Professional Writing course. This ?Z4ly employs a qualitative research method as a case study. The instruments of data collection are open-ended questionnaires and interviews. The subjects of this study are twenty-eight students of the English Education Department who enroll Professional Writing course. The findings show eleven writing problems related to cohesion and coherence and the issues toward academic writing stages. Furthermore, the students try to find solutions to their writing problemgP&several ways, for instance, by asking their friends and lecturers, using technology, and reading hooks or journal articles. Besides, it is hoped that this study can be beneficial for writing instruction, particularly in academic writing. Considering students’ perceptions toward academic writing problems and solutions, can help lecturers implement strategies or methods in teaching writing to develop student’s academic writing skills.
