Abstract

Ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui Ego Defense Mechanism yang digunakan oleh Roderick Usher di cerpen “The Fall of The House of Usher.” Ego Defense Mechanism merupakan analisis psikologi pada individu yang ditemukan oleh Sigmund Freud. Defense Mechanism merupakan pertahanan ego individu terhadap keadaan yang mengganggu yang memasuki alam bawah sadar. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menemukan penyebab dari pertahanan ego oleh Roderick Usher dengan cara meneliti Kesehatan mental dan kecemasan-kecemasan yang telah dialami oleh Roderick Usher pada cerpen tersebut. Studi ini menggunakan pendekatan qualitatif. Data-data utama yang diambil berupa kata, kalimat, frasa dari cerpen The Fall of The House of Usher karya Edgar Allan Poe. Proses penelitian dimulai dari membaca cerpen, mengidentifikasi masalah, mengumpulkan data, mengkategorikan data-data tersebut, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan teori Ego Defense Mechanism. Hasil dari studi ini mengetahui Ego Defense yang digunakan Roderick Usher yaitu repression, regression, sublimation, projection, dan reaction formation. Pertahanan Ego yang dilakukan oleh Roderick Usher disebabkan oleh keadaan mentalnya yang tidak stabil dan kecemasan tentang penyakit yang di derita oleh saudari kembar Roderick yang bernama Madeline Usher. Hal-hal yang terjadi pada Roderick Usher di rumah tersebut membawa sebuah trauma yang menjadi penyebab pertahanan ego yang dia lakukan di dalam cerpen tersebut. This study aims to determine the Ego Defense Mechanism used by Roderick Usher in the short story "The Fall of The House of Usher." Ego Defense Mechanism is a psychological analysis of individuals discovered by Sigmund Freud. Defense Mechanism is an individual ego defense against disturbing circumstances that enter the subconscious. This study aims to find the causes of Roderick Usher's ego defense by examining the mental health and anxieties experienced by Roderick Usher in the short story. This study uses a qualitative approach. The main data taken were in the form of words, sentences, and phrases from the short story The Fall of The House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe. The research process starts with reading short stories, identifying problems, collecting data, categorizing it, and then analyzing it using the Ego Defense Mechanism theory. The results of this study determine the Ego Defense used by Roderick Usher, namely repression, regression, sublimation, projection, and reaction formation. The ego defense carried out by Roderick Usher was caused by his unstable mental state and anxiety about the illness of Roderick’s twin sister, Madeline Usher, who suffered things that happened to Roderick Usher at the house and brought about a trauma that became the cause of the ego defense he did in the short story.
