Abstract

Penelitian ini memiliki tujuan untuk menjelaskan konflik yang dialami oleh tokoh utama, penyebab konflik, mekanisme pertahanan yang dialami oleh tokoh utama, penyebab mekanisme pertahanan, dan dampak mekanisme pertahanan ego pada Taylor Jenkins Reid novel, berjudul The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan fokus pada analisis konflik dan mekanisme pertahanan tokoh utama. Evelyn Hugo sebagai tokoh utama mengalami konflik yang menyebabkan dirinya cemas selama perjalanan hidupnya sejak muda hingga tumbuh sebagai bintang film terkenal. Evelyn menggunakan mekanisme pertahanan ego untuk mengatasi kecemasannya. Oleh karena itu peneliti menggunakan teori psikoanalitik dari Sigmund Freud. Peneliti menggunakan dua sumber data, data primer dari novel The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo karya Taylor Jenkins Reid. Data sekunder diambil dari jurnal, dan artikel dan buku-buku yang mendukung data. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan tokoh utama yang mengalami konflik internal dan eksternal. Penyebab konflik berasal dari ketidakseimbangan antara id dan superego tokoh utama. Tokoh utama menggunakan mekanisme pertahanan seperti supresi, sublimasi, regresi, dan pembentukan reaksi untuk mengatasi kecemasannya. Penyebab mekanisme pertahanannya adalah keinginannya yang besar untuk bertahan dari konflik yang membuatnya cemas sejak kecil. Mekanisme pertahanan memiliki dampak yang signifikan karena dapat membantu individu menghilangkan kecemasan dan tetap tenang dalam menghadapi konflik kehidupan. This study aims to explain the conflicts that the main character experience, causes of the conflicts, the experience of defense mechanisms, the causes of defense mechanisms, and the impacts of ego defense mechanisms in Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel entitled The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. This study was conducted using a qualitative approach, focusing on analysis of conflicts and defense mechanism of the main character. Evelyn Hugo as the main character had conflicts in her life's journey since young to growing up as a famous movie star which caused her anxiety. Evelyn uses ego defense mechanisms to overcome her anxiety. However, the researcher uses the psychoanalytic theory by Sigmund Freud. The researcher used two data sources, the primary data is from the novel entitled The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo written by Taylor Jenkins Reid’s. The secondary is taken from books, journals, and articles that support the data. The result of this research shows that the main character experienced internal and external conflicts. The causes of conflict come from the imbalanced of main character's id and superego. The main character uses defense mechanisms such as suppression, sublimation, regression, and reaction formation to overcome her anxiety. The cause of her defense mechanism is her great desire to survive the conflicts that make her anxious since she was young. Defense mechanisms have significant impacts because it can help individuals relieve anxiety and remain calm in facing life's conflicts.
