Abstract

This research paper is entitled “The Use of Code Switching Produced by The Hosts of NET TV Show Breakout-Episode Simple Plan Concert on September 9th, 2016”. This study uses descriptive qualitative and to summerize utterances of code-switching in music program Breakout NET TV. To analyze the types of code switching, the writer uses the theory of Poplack (1980). In addition, the writer also uses the theory of Gumperz (pg. 144, 1982) to analyze the function of code-switching. The result shows that there are sixty four (64) types of code-switching, inter-sentential code-switching reaches 56,3 % (36), intra-sentential is 32,8% (21), and tag-switching is 10,9% (7). Frequently, code-switching is used to makes communicate more effectively 42,2% (27), to ease communication 28,1% (18), to capture attention 20,3% (13), to emphasize a point 7,8% (5) and to convey precious meaning 1,6% (1). The conclusion is the participants in Breakout music program mostly used inter-sentential code-switching in their conversations and the function of code-switching mostly found in their utterances is to communicate more effectively.
