Abstract

This thesis discusses A Psychoanalysis of the Change of Personality of the Main Character in Edgar Allan Poe‘s The Black Cat. This study is aimed to find out the conflict faced by the main character, the causes that change the main character, and also to analyze the personality of the main character. Psychoanalysis of Thanatos by Sigmund Freud are used to analyze the change of personality of the main character pronoun as ―I‖. The Black Cat is a short story written by Edgar Allan Poe, which can be categorized as horror fiction. It was first published in the August 19, 1843, edition of The Saturday Evening Post.The data were collected by reading the short story and took some notes on important words, sentences, and paragraphs that relate to the topic. The narrator, who was once mild and kind gradually changed into an abusive bully and murderer. The conflict happened between the narrator vs. himself and the narrator vs. the cats and his wife. The causes that were found are the cats, the superstition, and the alcohol. The result of this study shows that every motivation to change comes from inside and triggered by external events.
