Abstract

The current study entitled "CONSUMERISM PORTRAYED IN P.J HOGAN'S CONFESSION OF A SHOPHAHOLIC’S MOVIE SCRIPT (2009) : A READER – RESPONSE STUDY" aimed to find out the main character’s actions reflecting consumerism, the causes the main character does consumerism, and the effects of her consumerism. The methodology used consist of three phases namely; preparation, data collection, and data analysis. The data were taken from the movie’s script, and by watching the movie completely. The data was analyze using Reader - Response Study and consumerism theory by Jean Baudrillard (1998) to analyze the main character’s actions. The findings showed that the character manifested the acts of consumerism, namely consuming as sign value and symbolic value. The causes and effects of her actions were also discussed.
