Abstract

This research paper entitled Speech Acts Recognized in the Utterances Communicated by the Main Characters in Niki Caro’s Mulan Movie. The purpose of this research is to determine the types of speech acts recognized by the main characters and decide the speech functions recognized by the main characters in the movie. Researchers took data from watching the movie and reading the subtitle of the movie. The analysis speech act regarding the theory of Austin (1962) and Searle (1969). The research uses descriptive qualitative research. The researcher found five types of speech act that Mulan movie. The types of speech acts is representative, commissive, directives, declarations, expressive. The types of speech act that dominate the main character are representative, and the least dominant is declaration. The researcher found four types of speech function in Mulan movie. There are statement, question, offer, request. The researcher found the speech function that appears the most is statement, and the least is offer.
