Abstract

First grades English vocabulary mastery is still low. This is because the students do not able to read English text fluently, so they need learning aid to improve their vocabulary. This study aims to describe the use of visual aid to improve mastery of English vocabulary of first graders of Tunas Harum Bangsa Elementary School. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. This method allows researchers to explain in detail based on the data obtained by conducting test. The purpose of the test is to be able to see the development of students' vocabulary which is facilitated by reading text in the student's text book. This is related to the ZPD theory where in this theory children "like experiencing the learning process and progressing with the help of others. The population in this study were students of class 1 Tunas Harum Bangsa Elementary School, 45 students. The sample in this study, is based on a saturated sample technique, namely the entire population is used as the research sample. The sample in this study are 45 students, which were divided into 23 students in 1A and 22 in 1B. The results showed that, 1) The use of image media can improve vocabulary mastery for the first graders of Tunas Harum Bangsa Elementary School; and 2) Aspects of mastery of English vocabulary that are emphasized in the use of image media, namely aspects of reading vocabulary and reciting vocabulary. Penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris kelas satu masih rendah. Hal ini dikarenakan siswa tidak dapat membaca teks bahasa Inggris dengan lancar, sehingga mereka membutuhkan bantuan belajar untuk meningkatkan kosa kata mereka. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan penggunaan alat bantu visual untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris siswa kelas satu SD Tunas Harum Bangsa. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Metode ini memungkinkan peneliti untuk menjelaskan secara rinci berdasarkan data yang diperoleh dengan melakukan tes. Tujuan tes adalah untuk dapat melihat perkembangan kosakata siswa yang difasilitasi dengan membaca teks di buku teks siswa. Hal ini berkaitan dengan teori ZPD dimana dalam teori ini anak “suka mengalami proses belajar dan maju dengan bantuan orang lain. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas 1 SD Tunas Harum Bangsa, 45 siswa. Sampel dalam penelitian ini , berdasarkan teknik sampel jenuh, yaitu seluruh populasi digunakan sebagai sampel penelitian.Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah 45 siswa, yang terbagi menjadi 23 siswa pada 1A dan 22 pada 1B. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa, 1) penggunaan media gambar dapat meningkatkan penguasaan kosakata bagi siswa kelas 1 SD Tunas Harum Bangsa; dan 2) Aspek penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris yang ditekankan dalam penggunaan media gambar, yaitu aspek kosakata bacaan dan kosakata resitasi.
