Abstract
The aim of this study is to analyze Lewis Carroll's poem Christmas Greeting from a Fairy to a Child in order to find implied meanings, message of peace, and symbol of harmony. This researcher uses reader response theory to analyze this object. In this study, the researcher used qualitative and quantitative research. This study's thorough reading of the poem's text showed that Carroll used narrative and symbolic devices to make a point about the value of harmony and community in life— especially during the peaceful and warm season of Christmas. The qualitative study focuses on the readers choosing significant meaning. This study used 31 respondents to collect the data. The researcher obtained data distributed via Google form. The results of the study are as follows; (1) the significant meaning 41.9% to celebrate the world or childhood, and 35.5% to emphasize the importance of imagination. Meanwhile, 19.4% chose to convey a sense of timelessness, and 3.2% chose to reminisce about the innocence of children. Furthermore, for the message of peace, 74.2 percent chose the imagery of a calm and serene Christmas, and the next most respondents, 12.9%, chose the affectionate address to the child. Meanwhile, 9.7% chose the gentle tone of the fairy, and finally, 3.2% chose three of them. And the last symbol of harmony, 54.8% chose the fairy as a symbol of peace and protection, and 45.2% chose the imagery of nature and Christmas. Meanwhile, 29% chose the relationship between the fairy and the child. The study's findings are to find that they primarily see it as a celebration of childhood wonder, imagination, and timelessness, with a focus on themes of peace through images of a quiet Christmas, kind speech, and fairies as symbols of protection and harmony.
