Abstract
ABSTRACT Praditta, Cyntia Bella. 2015. Metaphorical Expressions Applied In Josh Boone’s The Fault in Our Stars Thesis, English Department, Undergraduate Program of Stikubank University Semarang. Supervisor: Drs. Sugeng Purwanto, M.A This research paper is about “Metaphorical Expressions Applied In Josh Boone’s The Fault in Our Stars”. The aims of this research paper are to know the kinds of metaphoric expression that Josh Boone uses in his film and also to find the communication strategies used in metaphoric expression. The experience of finding a metaphocial expression might give a positive impact to someone who is interested in the message in film. The data of the study were taken by the script of The Fault In Our Stars’s film , which were then analyzed on the base of metaphorical and communication theory. The result show, there are forty-two (42) sentences of metaphors that found in The Fault in Our Stars’s film. There are personification (61.90%), hyperbole (21.43%), metonymy (7.15), and paradox (9.52%). The speaker mostly uses personification to make easier the other person to understand and also to refine the meaning of the sentence. The most frequently found categories related to communication strategies of metaphor are paraphrase. There are approximation (97.62%) and word coinage (2.38%). The speaker uses paraphrase because the only category in communication strategies suitable for metaphor.
