Abstract
This research paper presents A Case Study of Communication Strategies Used by an Indonesian Tour Guide with a Foreign Tourist in Lawang Sewu Semarang. The study explains the types of communication strategies employed by the tour guide and the foreign tourist in Lawang Sewu Semarang. The unit of analysis of this study is turn. The objects of this study are fifty four (54) turns of a conversation between the tour guide and the foreign tourist in Lawang Sewu Semarang. The steps in analyzing the data were Transcribing, Identifying, Classifying and Interpreting. In this research paper, the writer also conducted library research to find further information and some theories related with the subject matter.It was found out that there were eight types of Communication strategies found in the data. They are Topic avoidance 1 (1.72%), Message abandonment/skip 3 (5.17%), Circumlocution 8 (13.80%), Retrieval 8 (13.80%), Gambit 14 (24.13%), Self and other repetition 2 (3.45%), Self initiated repair 1 (1.72%) and Meaning negotiation strategies 21 (36.21%). The speaker‟s reason to employ those strategies they wanted to achieve their communicative purposes despite their limited linguistic competence. Thus, the strategies were used to compensate their weaknesses.
