Abstract
Utama, Kevin P.A. 2018. An Authentic Happiness Realized in Gabriele Muccino‟s Movie “The Pursuit of Happyness”: A Psychoanalysis Study. A Final Project in a Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for a Degree Award of Sarjana Sastra in English Language and Literature, Supervised by Dra. Murti Heruri, M.Hum. FBIB-UNISBANK Semarang. In the way to investigate the Authentic Happiness, the researcher takes the data from the Gabriele Muccino‟s movie : “The Pursuit of Happyness”. This movie is based on true story movie which adopted from Chris Gardner stories to pursuit the happiness for his family. The story tells about Gardner‟s struggle in the way to solve all the problems that came to his life. In analyzing the movie, the researcher use an Authentic Happiness theory by Seligman (2002) which will be achieved by determining and balancing three approaches to life, they are the Pleasant Life, the Good Life, and the Meaningful Life. The researcher also applies Psychoanalysis theory, which especially related to Id, Ego, and Superego discovered by Freud (1949). The approach that the researcher used to collect the data of the final project is a qualitative approach which the data are collected by using descriptive methods. The unit of analysis that the researcher used is the dialogue script of the movie. The purpose of the paper is going to find out the characters found in this film viewed from Freudian psychoanalytic position and Seligman positive psychology. The characters in this movie experience the id, ego, and superego which is related to the family and the worthy life. Then the authentic happiness experienced by the characters are the good life and meaningful life.
