Abstract

Mustika Putri, Maharani. 2018. Figurative Expression Recognized in Emily Dickinson’s Selected Poems. A Final Project in a Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for a Degree Award of Sarjana Sastra in English Expressionand Literature, Supervised by Yulistiyanti, S.S, M.Hum, FBIB-UNISBANK Semarang. This research paper analyzed the figurative expression found in Emily Dickinson’s selected poems. The poems are entitled “A Bird Came Down The Walk”, “A Narrow Fellow in The Grass”, “Nature is What We See”, and “Because I Could not Stop for Death”. This research is to find out the types and most dominant of the figurative expressionin Emily Dickinson’s selected poems. This research applied qualitative study. The researcher analyzed the poem by Emily Dickinson. The researcher identifies the poems from their figurative expression. After that, the word or phrase will be analyzed based on the figurative expression. The researcher found five figurative expressionin each poem, they are personification, metaphor, simile, irony, and anaphor. The most dominant figurative expression used in Emily Dickinson’s selected poems is anaphor. A trope includes personification, metaphor, simile, and irony. A scheme includes anaphora.
