Abstract

The current study investigates the speech act of refusal produced by Indonesians and Romanians speaking English. The study aims to find the similarities and differences in the way of performing refusal strategies. The data were collected using a Discourse Completion Test (DCT) by Beebe et al. (1990) works which consists of 12 scenarios from 4 different contexts of situations (invitation, offer, request, and suggestion). Next, the data were categorized based on the classification of refusal strategies established by Beebe et al. (1990). Then,they were analyzed in term of power (P) Social distance (D). The results have found that Indonesians produced more refusal strategies than Romanians, but Romanians performed it with more variants. Indonesia with its collectivist culture used indirect strategies followed by direct strategies and adjunct strategies to soften their refusals. Romania with its individualist culture used direct strategiesfollowed by indirect strategies.
