Abstract
Semiotics analysis has been conducted largely in many aspects, such as in advertisements and promotions. Semiotic is the study of signs and how signs relate with objects on certain unity. Paul (2001) elaborates about the form of signs in language. Sign takes the forms of words, images, gesture and objects. Human uses the sign or symbol to communicate to other people who have the same feeling, idea, and desire. In terms of communication, there are sign systems and symbols agreed by communicator. The study of sign systems and symbols is semiotics which becomes the main focus of this study. This study focuses on semiotic analysis of Dagadu T-shirt designs. The aim of this study is to uncover the meaning of both linguistic and semiotic units on T-shirt designs and how both of them relate to form a meaningful t-shirt design. This study applies Pierce Semiotic Theory which focuses on the relation between signs and objects in order to classify it into three kinds of relationship: icon, index, and symbol. The result of this study shows that the designs of dagadu t-shirts are dominated by iconic and symbolic relations. There are seven icon relations and four symbol relations found in ten T-shirt designs. The result also shows that semiotic units are more effective to raise impressions, while linguistic units are effective to redirect impressions into single matter. In conclusion both linguistics and semiotics units complement and complete each other in forming an artistic informative T-shirt designs.
