Abstract
This study attempts to construe (1) the meaning behind Chapter Al-A’la of translated Koran by Marmaduke Pickthall if it is analyzed using Halliday’s FSG xiv theoryand (2) field, tenor, and mode of the discourse found in Chapter Al-A’la of translated Koran by Marmaduke Pickthall. This research paper uses descriptive qualitative study. The results indicate that the role of the language is constitutive. The type of interaction is monologue coloured with dialogic. The realization of the medium is written but it is originally spoken and the channel is phonic or graphic with phonic nuance. The rhetorical thrust is instructional. The agentive or societal roles are the speaker, believed to be Allah the Almighty, and someone called Muhammad. The status is unequal. The social distance is minimal. The experiential domain of the text is about instruction and information that the speaker gave to the addressee. The short term goal of the text is to instruct and to give the message to the addressee so that the addressee can spread it out. The long term goal of the text is to make people who received the message follow and obey the addressee.
