Abstract
The purposes of this study are to investigate request strategies that students and lecturers of Faculty of Language and Cultural Studies of Stikubank University Semarang use when they are interacting using online communication and to find out how the principles of degree of imposition influence students and lecturers to make requests. The numbers of participants were 10people; the participants were divided into two categories (4lecturers and 6 students of Faculty of Language and Cultural Studies Stikubank University Semarang). To collect the data, the researcher asked the participants to make screenshots of conversations between students to lecturers and lecturers to students which contain request strategies. The researcher also used qualitative method to discover the findings. The results of this research show that both lecturers and students in Faculty of Language and Cultural Studies of Stikubank University Semarang prefer to use direct request, specifically imperatives when they were making requests. They also understand about the relation of degree of imposition, status, and social distance in general, and the participants also showed that they are more frequently used simple complex form to make a request than the complex one.
