Abstract
This paper aims to analyze the ego defense mechanism found in the main female character in Divergent movie script directed by Neil Burger. Divergent is an interesting movie, this movie tells about five factions in human life. This concept makes the audience imagine what if the five factions exist in the real world. This movie presents anxiety experienced by Tris as the main female character. Tris is a person that undergoes divergence; it is a state of mind by which a person has more than one nature inside him or her. Because of her divergence, her life is threatened by society around her that consider divergence as a danger. The research only focuses on the defense mechanism used by Tris to cope the anxiety in her life. This research uses qualitative methods to reveal Tris’ anxiety and defense mechanism. This research also uses psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud , especially anxiety theory. The findings of the research reveal that there are two types of anxiety in this movie script, realistic anxiety and moral anxiety. The five types of ego defense mechanisms used by Tris character, namely (1) Displacement, (2) Reaction formation, (3) Sublimation, (4) Repression and (5) Regression
