Abstract
This thesis presents Angels and Demons by Dan Brown. This novel tells about a professor of Harvard University who had a call during his sleeps, to assist Vittoria to catch the murderer of her father in his own secured lab in CERN. The murderer is known as the Assassin, the guard of the secret society Illuminati. The Assassin also steals antimatter, deadly subtans which could vaporize several blocks with just single drop of it. In arranging this thesis, the writer applies two methods namely, method of the study and method of approach. The former method refers to the way of selecting data and information, which relate to the study through some books and also the internet. In writing this thesis, the writer uses some books, and other references, which relate to the problem. In analyzing Angels and Demons, the writer uses intrinsic and extrinsic elements; they are character and definition of Assassin. This thesis describes the cruelty of the Assassin changes main character’s personality in Dan Brown’s Angels and Demons. The main character in Angels and Demons is Robert Langdon. He is intelligent person. He believes that Illuminati is defunct even there are proof in front of his eyes. He still rejects it, because based on his study about Illuminati; they are already defunct half century ago. Now the guard of Illuminati takes revenge to those who become the enemy of the society. The Assassin starts killing them and puts their bodies in public’s area in Vatican City. The Assassin cruelty in Angels and Demons is shown by the way the Assassin kills the Cardinals. First, he kills Vittoria’s father Leonardo Vetra in his secured lab at CERN, and steals his eye to open the chamber where Vetra hides the antimatter. He buries the first Cardinal with half of his body below ground. He also punctures the second cardinal right in his chest. He burns the third Cardinal alive and last he also drowns the fourth Cardinal with heavy chains, bisected into the man’s mouth like a horse’s bit. Langdon has to deal with the Assassin which is expert of killings, whom he never deals such things like that before. He has to face danger and feels his blood surging from his flesh. In conclusion, the analysis shows that the Assassin cruelty has the role to change Robert Langdon’s personality.
