Abstract
This study attempts to investigate a movie entitled The Professor and The Madman with two research questions, i.e.(1)What are the personalities of the main characters in The Professor and The Madman movie? (2) What kinds of ego defense mechanism do the characters perform o encounter the problems? The movie was downloaded from http://149.56.24.226/the-professor-and-the-madman- 2019/. Despite this research used descriptive qualitative, the data gathering divided into two parts. They are watching the movie with the transcript and re-reading the script of the movie. The study reveals that the first main character namely James Murrray categorized as wise person. It was proven Mr. Murray’s superego has 5 data and id has 4 data and ego has 2 data. And the second main character namely William Chester Minor categorized as careless person. It was proven that Dr. Minor’s id has 3 data, ego and superego have 2 data each. With respect to Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalysis, the researcher finds that the first main character encounters regression as the ego defense mechanism. And the second main character encounters denial and self-displacement as the ego defense mechanism.
