Abstract

This thesis is entitled “Code Switching Used in Teenager Magazine ‘OLGA’”. The study attempts to investigate a code switching used in teenager magazine that is taken on ISSUE 114/ V / 22 July – 4 Augusts 2010. The writer chooses the title since there is a lot of Code Switching and Code Mixing found in ‘OLGA’ teenager magazine. This thesis has two objectives. First, it is aimed at finding out realization of code switching and code mixing in ‘OLGA’ teenager magazine. Second, it is aimed at finding out the function of code switching used in rubrics of ‘OLGA’ teenager magazine. Documentation and library method are used to collect the data. The writer collects the data by reading books that are related with the object of the research. All of code switching and code mixing found in ‘OLGA’ teenager magazine are taken to be the data. By using the methods above, the writer gets the goal of this study that is to get the accurate and specific data. The data analyzed as follow: Identifying every sentence containing codes switching, classifying every sentence into types and function of code switching, interpreting the types and function of sentences that have been classified. The result of this study is the writer finds the types of code switching used in each sentence of the rubrics. They are inter-sentential switching, emblematic switching and establishing continuity with the previous speaker. The functions of Code Switching there are found five kinds as follows: to convey more exact meaning, to ease communication, to capture attention, to communicate more effectively, identify with a group.
