Abstract
This research examines the codes switched in the reality show Gaul Bareng Bule Program on Trans TV December 12 th , 2010. Specifically, the research is aimed at finding out types of codes switching performed by the host of the reality show Gaul Bareng Bule, and explaining the social functions of code – switching applied by the host. The data of the study were taken by downloading the program, which were then analyzed on the bases of Poplack (1980) theory. The results show that there are twenty-eight (28) inter-sentential code switching and nine-teen (19) intra-sentential code switching. The reasons which drive the host to switch codes are: to ease communication (52,09%), to communicate more effectively (22,92%), to capture attention (10,41%), to reiterate point (6,25%), to identify with a particular group (6,25%), and to convey a more exact meaning (2,08%).
