Abstract

Total Physical Response (TPR) is a teaching method developed by James Asher (James J, 1966). This study aims to obtain information on the application of the TPR method to teach action words to young learners, precisely the 4th graders of SDN Tambangan 01 Semarang. This method is aimed at teaching vocabulary to students who are still young, with an age range of 5–12 years. The researcher using qualitative as the research method to gather the data. Students at that age are still very active and prefer to express something through physical action, including while learning something. This method is perfect for teaching English vocabulary to students. In addition to the fact that this method is done using physical activity, it is also very pleasant to teach students because, by involving physical activity, students are not easily bored while following the teaching and learning activities. The role of the teacher in teaching materials using this method is also very important. Teachers should be able to interact with students and give examples of the use of TPR methods. Good relationships between teachers and students will facilitate the course of teaching activities. Before teachers give the test to students, they should clearly explain the material and give examples to students so that they can understand how to use the TPR method. With a clear voice, students can easily understand the content of the material. In this way, students can easily understand the content of the material and practice as much as they can, correctly and deliberately, using the media already available. Then students get a score to measure their abilities against each other. The result of the application of the TPR method to teach action words to students in class 4 of SDN Tambangan 01 Semarang is some of the students like using the TPR method and the rest does not like using the TPR method. Metode Total Physical Respon (TPR) merupakan metode mengajar yang diperkenalkan oleh James Asher (1966). Dilakukannya penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan informasi mengenai penerapan metode TPR untuk mengajarkan action words kepada siswa kelas 4 SD Tambangan 01 Semarang. Metode ini ditujukan untuk mengajarkan kosa kata kepada pelajar yang masih tergolong muda dengan rentang usia 5 tahun - 12 tahun. Peneliti menggunakan kualitatif sebagai metode pengumpulan data. Pelajar pada usia itu masih sangat aktif dan lebih suka mengekspresikan sesuatu melalui tindakan fisik, termasuk saat mempelajari sesuatu. Metode ini sangat cocok untuk mengajarkan kosa kata dalam Bahasa inggris kepada pelajar. Selain karena metode ini dilakukan dengan menggunakan kegiatan fisik, metode ini juga sangat menyenangkan untuk diajarkan kepada siswa karena dengan melibatkan kegiatan fisik siswa tidak mudah bosan saat mengikuti kegiatan belajar mengajar. Peran guru saat mengajarkan materi menggunakan metode ini juga sangatlah penting. Guru harus bisa berinteraksi dengan murid dan memberikan contoh penggunaan metode TPR. Hubungan baik antara guru dan murid akan mempermudah jalannya kegiatan belajar mengajar. Sebelum guru memberikan tes kepada siswa, guru harus dengan jelas menjelaskan materi dan memberikan contoh kepada siswa aagar siswa dapat memahami bagaimana penggunaan metode TPR. Dengan suara yang jelas maka siswa dapat dengan mudah memahami isi dari materi. Dengan hal tersebut para siswa dapat dengaan mudah memahami isi materi dan dapat melakukan praktek secaaraa benar dan dengaan menggunakan media yang telah tersedia. Lalu siswa diberikan nilai untuk mengukur kemampuan antara siswa satu dengan yang lainnya. Dengan demikian ditemukan hasil atas pengaplikaisan metode TPR untuk mengajarkan action words kepada siswa kelas 4 SDN Tambangan 01 Semarang.
