Abstract

Oppression becomes a right definition in reflecting the way world gives freedom to women in the past. The reflection about women' oppression is reflected on Margaret Atwood novel entitled The Handmaid’s Tale (1985). The research aims to find out the kinds of oppression done by Gilead to Offred, how Offred survived through it as a handmaid. The research uses Simone de Beauvoir’s theory of feminism. In doing the analysis, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative studies. The supported data are taken from Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale novel as the primary data and some previous studies as the secondary data. From the first analysis, the researcher finds out about three ways of oppressions done by Gilead to Offred as a handmaid by restricted Offred’s power, controlled Offred’s sexuality and reproductive right, and controlled Offred’s place of individual in society. Then the second analysis, there are two ways of survival done by Offred through the oppressions as a handmaid by controlled her emotions and finally took a risk by doing rebellion
