Abstract
This study is conducted to find out the social conflict found in the short story "The Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant. The purpose of this study is, to explain what theory is used to analyze this short story, the cause of the conflict, and the condition of the character named Mathilde Loisel who is told in the short story “The Necklace”. This study is done based on Marxism study. The object of the study the short story entitled the Necklace written by Guy de Maupassant published in 1884. The conclusion of this research is, in the work of Guy De Maupassant, I found that the theory applied to the short story The Necklace is social conflict. Madame Mathilde Loisel has an internal conflict with herself because she has the desire to be rich, the desire to look luxurious, and the right to live in luxury. Meanwhile, Madame Mathilde Loisel and Madame Forestier experienced external conflicts, Living environment, and Job Mr. Loisel. In this short story, I found several conditions of Madame Mathilde Loisel, namely environmental conditions, two financial conditions, physical conditions, financial conditions, and activity condition.
