Abstract

It was decided that the researcher had chosen ‘OPPRESSIVE CULTURE TOWARD HOMOSEXUALITY REFLECTED IN HOZIER’S: “TAKE ME TO CHURCH”’ as the title for this research. The researcher will explain about the figures of speech contained in the lyrics and their meanings which are reflected in the song lyrics that there is a culture of oppression. The researcher uses a qualitative-internet research method in conducting this research, in which the researcher collects several relevant and accurate sources that are suitable for this topic. In writing this research, the researcher will focus on six types of figures of speech, namely metaphor, symbol, irony, hyperbole, personification and simile. This study aims to determine the figurative language found and used in Hozier's song in showing the culture of oppression of homosexuals which is reflected in each meaning in the lyrics found. Figurative language is usually used to say something figuratively or one of the language styles that have other than the literal meaning of the word and is often used and found in poetry. For writers this is very useful to make the language they use much more beautiful to listen to. Figurative language also cannot be expressed in other ways when conveying the nuances of the meaning used.
