Abstract
This thesis entitled, The Characterization of Severus Snape as The Tragic Hero: Structuralism Study on Harry Potter Series. This research is aimed to explain the binary oppositions in the personality of Severus Snape in Harry Potter Series. It is Also aimed to describe the concept of structuralism applied in the Severus Snape’s character in the Harry Potter series. In this study the writer uses a context-oriented approach. In this research, researcher uses structuralism theory to find out the characterization of Severus Snape as a tragic hero in Harry Potter Series. The uses of structuralism theory in this study to know how concept of structuralism applied in the Harry Potter by analyzing in a structured way how the characters are presented in this novel series. The result of this analysis, the writer found plot, characterization, settings, and theme as an intrinsic element that causes the changes of Severus Snape. Structuralism emphasizes the notion that underlying systems or structures influence how a cultural phenomenon manifests itself on the surface. There are multiple binary oppositions at work in Snape's situation. As discussed previously, the binary oppositions between, for instance, love and hate, loyalty and betrayal, light and darkness, might be understood as contributing to Snape's character as a tragic hero. Skripsi ini berjudul, The Characterization of Severus Snape as The Tragic Hero: Structuralism Study on Harry Potter Series. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan oposisi biner dalam kepribadian Severus Snape dalam serial Harry Potter. Juga bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan konsep strukturalisme yang diterapkan pada tokoh Severus Snape dalam serial Harry Potter. Dalam penelitian ini penulis menggunakan pendekatan berorientasi konteks. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan teori strukturalisme untuk mengetahui karakterisasi Severus Snape sebagai pahlawan tragis dalam serial Harry Potter. Penggunaan teori strukturalisme dalam penelitian ini untuk mengetahui bagaimana konsep strukturalisme diterapkan dalam Harry Potter dengan menganalisis secara terstruktur bagaimana tokoh-tokoh yang dihadirkan dalam seri novel ini. Dari hasil analisis ini, penulis menemukan plot, penokohan, latar, dan tema sebagai unsur intrinsik yang menyebabkan perubahan Severus Snape. Strukturalisme menekankan gagasan bahwa sistem atau struktur yang mendasari mempengaruhi bagaimana fenomena budaya memanifestasikan dirinya di permukaan. Ada beberapa oposisi biner yang bekerja dalam situasi Snape. Seperti yang telah dibahas sebelumnya, oposisi biner antara, misalnya, cinta dan benci, kesetiaan dan pengkhianatan, terang dan gelap, dapat dipahami sebagai kontribusi karakter Snape sebagai pahlawan tragis.
